2024 Safety Expo

Join Alaska Safety Alliance and ABC Alaska at the 2024 Safety Expo on May 9th, 9 AM – 5 PM, at the BP Energy Center.  

This is a free event and open to the public.  Pre-registration for training is required and space is limited! Attendees must be 18+ to attend trainings, but anyone is welcome to come visit the safety vendors and food trucks! All training sessions are offered FREE by volunteer instructors. Hilti Powder Actuated Tool (PAT)

Powder Actuated Tools, also called direct fasteners or explosive fasteners require training before operating. Get a Qualified Operator’s Card on Hilti direct fastening tools while learning how to safely operate and maintain the tool and how to react if an incident occurs. This class will be 1/2 inside in a classroom, and half outdoors for hands on application. Please dress for the weather!

DOT Signs & Symptoms for Supervisors (Drug & Alcohol)

Signs and symptoms are used to determine if an employee may be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol that would warrant the employee to be tested. Instruction will provide supervisors with the knowledge of what they need to look for and what to do if someone appears unfit for duty.

Portable Fire Extinguisher

This session will cover NFPA 10 spacing and sizing basics, the importance of proper extinguisher coverage during construction, matching the extinguisher to the hazard, precautions, and use of fire extinguisher (PASS). Excavation & Trenching Safety

Open excavations in the Earth’s surface can cave in unexpectedly, causing injury or death if the proper protective systems are not in place. This course will increase your awareness of important safety procedures that help prevent trenching and excavation incidents.

Adult First Aid, CPR, AED

This 4-hour course provides training for rendering aid to adults and children over 12, utilizing American Red Cross course guidelines, materials, and practices. This course has a renewal period of 2 years for all components. Please note: You must be physically able to perform all requirements of this training including performing CPR on the floor. Hazard Recognition

Hazard identification is a key part of any injury and illness prevention program. Hazards cannot be mitigated if they aren’t identified! In this training, you will learn to increase your awareness of common construction site hazards and will practice hunting for hazards.

OSHA Updates

This course offers a comprehensive overview of OSHA regulations, focusing on the division of jurisdiction between federal and state OSHA plans, multi-employer worksite policies, the General Duty Clause, and the rights and protections afforded to workers. Participants will explore the nuances of OSHA's enforcement authority, responsibilities of employers on multi-employer worksites, and the legal framework for whistleblower protections.

Key topics include:

•  Federal & State Plan OSHA Jurisdiction: Understanding the scope of OSHA's authority, the differences between federal and state-run OSHA programs, and how jurisdiction is determined.

•   Multi-employer Worksites: Examining OSHA's policies for worksites with multiple employers.

•   General Duty Clause: Analyzing the requirements under Section 5(a)(1) of the OSH Act, which mandates employers to provide a workplace free from recognized hazards likely to cause death or serious harm.

•   Worker Rights and Whistleblower Protection: Highlighting the rights of workers to a safe workplace, the process for filing complaints, and protections against retaliation for reporting unsafe conditions or violations.

•  Current Issues: Discussing emerging trends, regulatory updates, and challenges in workplace safety and health, including new standards, enforcement priorities, and industry-specific concerns.

This class is designed for safety professionals, HR personnel, employers, and anyone involved in workplace safety compliance. It combines theoretical knowledge with practical applications to ensure participants are equipped to navigate OSHA regulations effectively.
